WHY SHOULDN’T I SHAVE MY DOUBLE-COATED DOG?
Explore the benefits of your dog's natural coat and how regular brushing and deshedding can keep it healthy without shaving.
WHAT IS A DOUBLE COAT?
A double-coated dog has two layers of fur: a soft, dense undercoat and a longer outer coat. The undercoat helps insulate your dog, while the outer coat provides protection from dirt, moisture, and the sun. Breeds such as Huskies, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, and Pomeranians have double coats. These layers work together to help regulate body temperature in both cold and warm weather.
WHY SHOULDN'T I SHAVE MY DOGS DOUBLE COAT?
Shaving a double-coated dog can interfere with the coat’s natural ability to protect the skin and regulate temperature. Removing the outer coat can leave the skin more exposed to sunburn, irritation, and other environmental factors. Shaving can also cause the coat to grow back unevenly or change in texture, and in some dogs, the coat may not return to its original condition. While shaving may seem like a quick fix for shedding or hot weather, it is generally not recommended unless there is a medical or specific grooming reason.
HOW CAN I KEEP MY DOUBLE-COATED DOG COOL?
Instead of shaving your dog, focus on keeping their coat maintained and helping them stay comfortable in warm weather. You can also ask a professional groomer about services such as a deshedding bath to help remove loose undercoat. If your dog has severe matting or a medical condition affecting their coat, consult your groomer or veterinarian about the safest approach.
