WHAT SHOULD I DO WHEN MY PUPPY CRIES IN THE CRATE?

Learn how to build positive crate experiences and help your puppy feel safe and comfortable.

2 min read

Hearing your puppy cry in their crate can be frustrating, especially when you are trying to help them settle down or sleep through the night. Puppies may cry because they are adjusting to a new environment, need a potty break, feel lonely, or have not yet learned to feel comfortable in their crate. Helping your puppy build a positive association with their crate takes patience, consistency, and an understanding of what they need.

MAKE THE CRATE A POSITIVE PLACE

Your puppy should learn that their crate is a safe, comfortable place to rest rather than somewhere they are sent as punishment. Encourage them to explore the crate by tossing treats inside, offering meals inside it, and rewarding them for entering on their own. Reward calm behavior and allow your puppy to come out during planned breaks rather than only opening the door when they are actively crying for attention. Keep these experiences positive so your puppy begins to associate the crate with good things.

BE CONSISTENT

Learning to relax in a crate takes time, and every puppy adjusts at a different pace. Continue practicing gradually, rewarding calm behavior, and responding appropriately to your puppy’s needs. With patience and consistency, your puppy can learn that their crate is a comfortable place to rest.
