WHY IS MY DOG JUMPING ON THE COUNTER?

Dogs often jump on counters because they smell food, see something interesting, or have discovered that counter surfing can lead to a tasty reward. Even if your dog only finds food once in a while, that success can encourage them to keep trying. Some dogs may also jump up out of curiosity or because they want to be involved in whatever their family is doing.

TEACH AN ALTERNATIVE PLACE

Instead of jumping on the counter, your dog can learn to settle on a mat, lie on their bed, or stay in a designated spot while you prepare food. Practice this behavior when the kitchen is calm and reward your dog for remaining in their spot. Gradually practice while doing everyday activities, such as preparing a meal or unloading groceries. Giving your dog a clear alternative helps them understand what you expect them to do instead.

AVOID REWARDING COUNTER SURFING

If your dog jumps on the counter, calmly guide them back to the floor without giving them food or extra attention. Avoid yelling or turning the situation into a game, as your dog may find the reaction exciting. Make sure everyone in the household follows the same rules and never feeds your dog directly from the counter. Consistency helps your dog learn that jumping up will not get them what they want.
