HOW DO I STOP PUPPY BITING?

It’s important to set boundaries early! Explore ways to redirect biting, teach appropriate play, and help your puppy understand that human skin is never a chew toy.

Puppy biting is common, but it is important to teach your puppy from the beginning that their mouth should never be on human skin. Even if your puppy is playing or teething, biting hands, arms, or feet is a behavior that needs to be addressed consistently. Setting clear boundaries early helps your puppy develop appropriate habits and learn how to interact safely with people as they grow.

REDIRECT BITING IMMEDIATELY

When your puppy tries to bite your skin, calmly stop the interaction and redirect them to an appropriate chew toy. Avoid allowing your puppy to chew on your fingers or hands, even during play, because this can make it harder for them to understand the rules. If your puppy continues trying to bite you, end the interaction and give them a chance to settle down. Consistency is key to helping your puppy understand that human skin is never an appropriate chew toy.

TEACH APPROPRIATE PLAY

Puppies need to learn how to play without using their teeth on people. Use toys to create a clear boundary between what they can bite and what they cannot. If your puppy becomes too excited and starts nipping during play, stop the game and resume only when they are calm. Everyone in the household should follow the same rules so your puppy does not receive mixed messages about biting.

PROVIDE BREAKS

Puppies often become more mouthy when they are tired, overstimulated, or have had too much excitement. Watch for signs that your puppy is struggling to settle, such as repeatedly grabbing clothing, biting hands, or becoming increasingly difficult to redirect. Provide breaks, quiet time, and plenty of opportunities for rest throughout the day. Helping your puppy regulate their excitement can make it easier for them to practice appropriate behavior.

BE CONSISTENT WITH BOUNDARIES

Teaching your puppy not to bite people requires patience, repetition, and clear expectations. Never encourage biting on skin as a game, even when your puppy is small, because the same behavior can become more painful and difficult to manage as they grow. Reward appropriate play, redirect biting every time it happens, and end interactions when your puppy cannot settle. With consistent training, your puppy can learn that toys are for biting and human skin is off-limits.
