WHAT DO I DO WHEN MY DOG BARKS AT OTHER DOGS ON WALKS?
Learn simple ways to help your pup stay calm, focused, and comfortable when other dogs pass by.
Dogs may bark because they are excited, nervous, frustrated, or simply unsure of how to interact with another dog while on leash. Understanding why your dog is barking can help you know how to respond and make walks more enjoyable.
GIVE YOUR DOG SPACE
If you see another dog approaching, give your dog enough space to stay comfortable. Cross the street, step off the walking path, or move to a different area if needed. However, try not to make this your dog’s automatic routine every time they see another dog, as they may begin to expect it and become confused or frustrated when you are unable to create that distance. Use space when your dog needs it, while also practicing calm behavior when you can safely continue walking past another dog.
DON'T FORCE AN INTERACTION
Your dog does not need to say hello to every dog they see on a walk. Allowing dogs to approach each other while they are both on leash can sometimes increase excitement or frustration. Instead, focus on teaching your dog that they can calmly walk past other dogs without needing to interact.
GET THEIR ATTENTION
Before your dog starts barking, try getting their attention with their name or a treat. Reward them when they look at you or remain calm while the other dog passes. With practice, your dog can learn that checking in with you is more rewarding than reacting to another dog.
